A standard homeowners policy typically protects your home and personal belongings against natural disasters and many uncontrollable events, but often does not cover earthquakes or floods. Your policy, however, can be expanded to cover these events; and you should consider purchasing the extra coverage if you live in a flood zone or an area that is susceptible to earthquakes.
